Fretting fatigue is a problem of considerable interest in many applications, and this presentation will review the main contributions to its understanding. In particular, it will be shown that it may be one of the aspects which may require attention in the next phases of the design of the new Messina bridge, giving a serious concern because it is difficult to predict reliably life under fretting fatigue, and hence ensure a final safe life of 200 years of the world record breaking bridge.
